My Cloth Diaper Wash Routine (How-To)

When first starting out with cloth diapers, it can be confusing.

The biggest question I had was :
"How the heck do I wash these things?"

There are many different ways to wash cloth diapers. Different manufacturers have different requirements.

For example, my diaper covers cannot be washed on hot.... and the instructions say no bleach ( I wouldn't use bleach anyway, it's very toxic).

Other reasons for different types of washing routines is the water. Some people have well water, others city water, hard water, soft water, etc.

Laundry soap is also another factor.

My goal in writing this is to show you how I wash my cloth diapers, and hopefully help you in the process of figuring out your wash routine.

I live in an apartment and have a mini washer of my own. It works just as great ( if not better) than some regular size washers! I can wash a full load of diapers every other day in it with no problem .

My wash routine took 2 months to establish. I went through trial and error to establish it. Through that trial and error, I only had  to strip my diapers twice. Partly because Baby A also had a diaper rash and the cream wanted to build up ( had zinc oxide in it).

However, since that time I have not had to strip my diapers at all. Once my wash routine was established, I have had no issues with the diapers absorbancy!

The key to washing cloth diapers is "Rinse Rinse Rinse" in other words... LOTS of water.

Here is my cloth diaper wash routine:

1. I wash my cloth diaper covers first. They are separate as they cannot be washed on HOT.
2. I separate out my covers and put them in the machine on COLD. They go on HEAVY wash & HIGH water which is the heaviest setting on my machine. I add in 2-3 drops of tea tree and/or lavender oil. I also add in 3/4 manufacturer's recommended amount of laundry soap.
3. Once the 1st wash is done, I add a rinse cycle. The covers are done.

*Before washing covers I use a diaper sprayer to spray out the poopy ones.

Now that the covers are clean, I go to the diaper pail and pull out the inserts & prefolds.
I have hemp. microfiber, and bamboo. I wash them all together the same with no issues.
These can go on hot :) *
*provided it follows manufacturer directions, otherwise don't use hot water.

1. I spray out any diapers that  have poop ( Baby A poops 4 times a day, and always poops right before diaper laundry....always)

2. I put the washer on WARM/COLD, HEAVY, HIGH water setting. I add in 2-3 drops of tea tree oil.
This is considered my pre-rinse cycle. A rinse was not enough for Baby A as she is a heavy wetter. She pees A LOT, so this is better than standing there and spraying pee out of each and every diaper ( who has time for that?!) I add in diapers.

3. When the 1st cycle is done, I come back and move the water temperature to HOT (allowed by my diaper manufacturer), HEAVY wash cycle, HIGH water setting. I add in 1 scoop of Borax ( I use an old protein scoop that is 21 g...just short of 1 ounce), I have found this amount is perfect for Baby A's diapers.

I add in Sun Free & Clear detergent. I have used this with no problems at all!

4. Once this wash is done. I do another cycle COLD, HEAVY wash cycle, HIGH water setting. This is my final rinse setting. Instead of running a bunch of rinses, I find this most effective. I don't add anything to this cycle. Just water ;)

 5. I hang my covers and inserts to dry on a drying rack. I don't ever put them through the dryer. I sun them through our sliding glass door which helps to sanitize and get out stains.

Every once in a while for extra cleaning power I change up the insert routine.

1.      I put the Borax in the first cycle with the tea tree oil/lavender oil.
2.      2nd cycle I add in soap &  ½ cup hydrogen peroxide.
3.      3rd cycle stays the same.

I like to use this second routine on days where it is not sunny and the diapers could use the disinfecting power of the peroxide.

I haven’t had to strip my diapers with my wash routine. The diapers come out clean every time. I have softer city water. I think if I had hard water I would only have to change up the soap I use as some people have mentioned to me that powder is better than liquid when you don’t have good “diaper water”.

My routine can take up to 3 hours. I don’t mind because I don’t have to strip my diapers like some people I know have to do.

One key when washing cloth diapers :
Make sure they smell like nothing when you hang them up to dry. If they smell like soap or anything....rinse some more. If they still smell like pee or poo, then you need to use more soap.

Another Note:
I wash my cloth wipes right in with my prefolds and inserts! I simply use baby wash cloths as cloth wipes.

Check out my cloth wipes recipe here.

What is your cloth diaper routine? What soap do you use? Do you sun your diapers?

I would love to hear your routine!

As always, be sure to follow manufacturer washing instructions, do not void the warranty on your diapers. These are only things that have worked for me, you have to find what works for you.

Easy Cloth Wipes Solution {Recipe}

I was all in on cloth diapers  from day one! We cloth diapered Baby A in the hospital and she hasn't worn a single disposable diaper. ( exception: the nurses brought her back to me in a disposable and as soon as they handed her to me, I ripped it off and put on some fluff).
However, that whole time I was using disposable wipes. For whatever reason, I didn't even think I could do cloth wipes too. I knew other moms did, but I guess it was too big of a leap for me in the beginning.
Just recently, about a month ago, Hubby and I switched to cloth wipes for Baby A. I am so glad we did! It is soooo much better!

I bought about 60 baby washcloths like these (link).

I saved an old Pamper's wipes container and washed it out.
Then I came up with the solution that works best for my baby girl's bum.

Many of the ingredients are optional. I recommend the soap and a moisturizing agent. I like the tea tree because it helps to prevent mold and promotes healing.

Recipe:

1 squirt ( 3/4 tsp approx) Dr Bronner's Castile Soap ( I like the tea tree scent)
1 tsp olive oil
1 tsp aloe juice or gel
3-5 drops tea tree essential oil
3-5 drops lavender essential oil
2 cups water

Mix all ingredients together.
Place wipes in container.
Pour solution over wipes.
Close wipes container tight, and shake to disperse solution.

Done.

I hope that this works for your baby too!

Do you use cloth wipes?
Do you have a favorite wipes solution recipe?

Some babies have sensitive skin, use essential oils with caution and care. Don't ever apply essential oils directly to your babies skin ( or your own) without knowing the proper dilutions. Omit essential oils if you/ your baby is sensitive.

Ask Me Monday! #11

"What are your thoughts on introducing baby food at 4 months old, and do you make your own baby food? If you buy store bought what kind?"

Our children are so important, so what we feed them is just as important.
Babies have immature guts and lack certain bacterias to properly digest food at a young age.

I made the mistake of listening to my doctor when introducing baby food to Baby A. The doctor wanted to introduced baby food to her at 4 months.  She was not ready at 4 months old.
After a couple weeks of making her pureed food at home, I went back to breastfeeding her exclusively.
Hubby and I re-introduced baby food at 10 months and it was a whole different experience. She currently at 11 1/2 months old eats baby food twice a day and drinks breastmilk for the rest. She is not ready for full solids yet. However, when she seems ready then we will introduce more.
I make all her baby food at home. This way I can ensure that she is getting clean, organic baby food without added ingredients.

I do not know which brands of baby food are good, however if you buy it go for organic and read the labels. You want pure, clean food for your baby. If it has additives, skip it. Babies are surrounded by too many chemicals, they don't need to eat chemicals too.

As a parent we need to make informed choices regarding our own children, every baby is different.

ASK ME MONDAY #8!

I got this question from a new mama.

"What is your favorite place to buy Baby A clothes?...Nothing too pricey!"

I love this question! Truth is, you can find a ton of great baby clothes with out breaking the bank.

Babies grow out of their clothes so quickly, that I can hardly justify spending a fortune.

I love Once Upon A Child. It is an amazing store. People can sell their gently used baby items, and buy gently used baby items as well. We bought a lot of Baby A's clothes there, and her swing too! We even found a couple of brand new outfits for Baby A there also!

Whenever we don't find what we need there, we go to Burlington Coat Factory, there is a ton of nice stuff there too!

Last on our list is Target, I love when they have sales! It's an easy place for us to shop as we buy baby wash and her shampoo there, so we usually browse while in the store.

Another wonderful thing when Baby A was born was hand-me-downs from her cousin! It was really wonderful the first 3 months having been loaned clothes so we didn't have to buy so many.

My favorite part about hand-me-downs and re-sale shops, are that they are great for the environment & there are less chemical pesicides on the clothing as they have already been washed at least a few times.

I hope this helps!
Can some of my readers help her out? Where are some of YOUR favorite places to get baby clothes?

Sleep Training Your Baby With Compassion.

photo googled from around web

Our daughter has been a snuggly baby since she was born. She wants to be with mom and dad at all times.
She is not fond of sleeping in her own bed. Or having a bedtime.

When she was first born and until this past Monday we practiced safe co-sleeping with our daughter. This gave her the security that she needed and us the valuable sleep that we needed.

We tried unsuccessfully a few times to set a bed  time and to get her into her crib, yet still she slept bedside our bed in her little portable bed.

She turned 9 months old this past Wednesday. Knowing before that, that she would be 9 months old soon, we decided that Monday would be a  good day to sleep train her.

I am not fond of the word train. I am not fond of the word schedule. But what else do you call it?

I don't schedule our days out. Only the wake up times and bed times are being scheduled. This gives flexibility in our schedule through the day.

So far things are going well. We don't believe in the "cry it out" method. I find that heartbreaking and cruel. It works for some, but not for me.  We believe in compassion and raising with gentleness in our home.

So how are we finally getting her  to sleep in her own bed?

1. We started a routine with Baby A, every night at the same time, we feed her, change her, then read her a story. Then lights out.

2. If she cries we soothe her by talking to her or holding her hand ( or both).
3. If soothing doesn't work, we ( mostly hubby because he is better at this!) rock her for a short time until she calms down, and then put her back in her bed.
4. She brings Sophie the giraffe to bed with her most nights. Other nights its another loved toy.
5. We play her sound machine.
6. I wake her up at the same time every morning after Hubby leaves for work.

Most nights this week have gone wonderfully!
Although the past 2 nights she woke up multiple times, and I didn't get any sleep.

She has a tendency to fight sleep so it is something that will take some time, but soon she will be sleeping soundly through the night in her crib.

The baby that once used to never nap during the day time takes a nap around 10 am almost every morning so far ( only 1 morning did we have an issue, but the garbage truck came late & woke her up :( ) .

How long did it take you to sleep "train" your baby?
How long did you co-sleep if at all?
What were great sleeping strategies that you used?

I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions!

Baby A is 8 1/2 months?! Time flies!

I cannot believe that Baby A is 8 1/2 months old already! She is talking up a storm! She crawls backward and is standing by pulling herself up on things.
It seems as though she is trying to sprout some more teeth too!
It is unbelievable to me that my newborn is growing up so fast already.
I'm already working on her 1 year birthday party! I have soooo many ideas!
Moms, when did you plan your baby's first birthday?
What was the theme?

I hope that everyone has  been enjoying the week. We got a storm here yesterday & the forecast is rain for the next couple of days.
I can't complain though.

Our garden needed it.

Lolli's Ramblings: 4th of July, juicing, and more!

I hope that you all had a wonderful 4th of July!

We had a great holiday! We spent the entire day at the beach with Baby A! It was her first time seeing the water. A lake beach was a nice way to get her used to the water before we take her to the ocean. She loved the sand & especially loved splashing in the water!
She didn't want to get out of the water.

We took all of our snacks with us (the snacks I made will be posted on the blog soon!) , we didn't need to worry about what to eat. There was plenty of food everywhere, but none of it was tempting. In fact, after seeing so much junk food, I discovered I am not even hungry for it anymore, it actually looked gross to me.

This was the swim suit Baby A wore:

We loved the ruffles!!

Her swim diaper:

I wore a bandeau style bikini top and Hubby some black swim trunks.

It felt good to get outside and get some sun! The weather was absolutely beautiful & in the 90's.

After the beach we came home and had teriyaki stir fry for dinner, and some cucumber juice that I made with our Breville Juicer. The juicing is going well, we are still trying to find more recipes, but the juice that comes out of the Breville is fantastic.

We watched fireworks from our back porch and on tv, both Macy's and the Boston Pops. Since Baby A is only 7 months old I thought she might be startled by them, but she wasn't. She really enjoyed them!

How was your 4th of July?

In addition I have joined Hubby in not drinking coffee. I do not see coffee as a bad thing, I actually think plain coffee has wonderful health benefits, however, I do find myself a bit of a coffee addict. So I have switched to green tea for the next few weeks to see how I feel. We already drink green tea in the evenings, so I figured why not drink it in the morning too?

Extended Breastfeeding?

Ok, since so many people are talking about this, I had to give my two cents.

The 26 year old mother in this picture is breastfeeding her son who is 3 years old.

You can read an interview with her here.

There have been all sorts of comments and controversy over this cover already. Moms have been debating the topic of "extended breastfeeding" for a long time, so, it came as no surprise to me that moms would be divided over this cover as well.

First off, I want to applaud Jamie for her natural parenting. Seeing as she was breastfed herself until 6 years old, it seems only right that she would want her children to have the same "bond" and health benefits that she did growing up.

How this applies to me:

While I applaud other mothers for extended breastfeeding, I tend to not believe one way or the other. I believe that each mother should do what is best for them and their child. I think all mothers who are physically able should consider breastfeeding at least in the short term.
After all, breastmilk is the best thing for babies in my opinion.

Regarding Baby A, I will breastfeed extendedly...kind of. I plan to breastfeed Baby A for the 1st year, during this time I pump and save milk, so that she can get breastmilk through a bottle or sippy cup, after the 1st year mark. I personally think that once a child is old enough to drink from a cup, that is where they should get their milk from. This is because my personal comfortability is that. That is where I draw the line with my child.

In general I do believe that breastfeeding a school aged child is a little far, but I have no issues with children receiving breastmilk served in a cup. To me a child receiving breastmilk is ENTIRELY better than drinking cows milk ( which is completely unnatural ) and has numerous benefits to a child's health and development.
Again though, I do not judge parents for wanting what is best for their child.

I saw several comments related to the article. These comments were enfuriating to me.  People were calling it "child abuse" to breastfeed a 3 year old?? How in the world do they justify such harsh comments?

Here's my two cents on the commenters:

One, grow up. Two, it is more child abuse to feed your child junk food and fast food, and deprive them of nutrition knowingly than it will EVER be to feed your child nutritious breastmilk because you CARE. Though I hardly believe that fast food is child abuse either ( althought it is careless & unhealthy ). Just making the point that people need to stop with the judging and applaud each other for their hard efforts as parents.

Thoughts on the cover picture?

I think it's fine, the chair is a little much...might have been better if she were holding him. I get a "strong moms" vibe off of the picture though, or "taking a stance for natural parenting".  Some people get a "sexual" vibe off of the picture, but I don't see that. I think people are reading a little much into it.

So, are you "mom enough" to breastfeed?

That's all for now.

Leave your comments below, I would love to hear your thoughts.
FYI, keep it respectful & clean.

My 12 Baby Item Must- Have's!

A lot of people I know are having babies, so since it's "baby season" I thought I would share some of the most important baby items that we have.

My Baby Must Have's are:

1. Fisher Price Space Saver High Chair- This is a huge deal to me. It really does save space & you can put in on the floor or on a chair! It reclines and has a pretty large tray as well.
2. Graco Pack N Play- We have the Graco Pack N Play Capri with the removable bassinet & changing table. I will be honest. We use our pack n play a lot. Baby A likes to sleep in it, however, knowing what I know now, I would have gotten a different pack n play as we didn't use the bassinet very long & maybe used the changing table twice.
What we have.

Here's the playard I think we should have gotten:
Baby Trend Deluxe Nursery Center

3. Sleep Nest.-We never bought one of these, but we should have. It would have saved us a lot of sleepless nights, as Baby A would only sleep when she was with us.

Here's what we should have gotten:

Summer Infant Rest Assured Sleeper
4. Bright Starts Bounce Baby. -Baby A loves this! I love the bright colors and the floor board, it also takes up less space than a traditional exersaucer.

5. Pacifier. -Not any pacifier though. I like the Avent Soothie & the The First Years Gumdrop Pacifiers. I like that they are one piece and are made out of a safe material. There are no little pieces that could come off and be swallowed.

Avent Soothie

The First Years Gumdrop

6. Fisher Price Calming Vibrations Bouncer.- Baby A loves this. She has loved it since day one. It's her favorite place to hang out, and at 24 weeks old she still loves it. They make another model now that has butterflies and matches the space saver high chair.

7. White Onesies. -Lots and lots of onesies. You will need them.

8. Burp clothes.- Tons of these too. Babies spit up, a lot.

9. Vulli Sophie the Giraffe.- Our daughter has a ton of teethers, but the only one she likes is Sophie.  Sophie goes everywhere with Baby A.

10. Baby Carrier.- Any kind of baby carrier that suits you! We have 2 different kinds of structured Infantino's and a Moby! We have used them all!

11. Baby Trend Jogger in Gray Mist. -We love our jogging stroller! It is amazing. We like to take Baby A for walks in it. It takes the bumps well and is just an all around amazing stroller.

12. Breast Pump.- If you are breastfeeding, this is a must in my opinon. I have two different pumps. A manual Medela and a double electric by Avent. Find what works for you. But my opinion is any pump by these two brands is good!

These are just my opinions from what has worked for us with Baby A. Of course all babies are different! There are tons of products that we have and use for Baby A on a daily basis but these are my favorites so far!

Breastfeeding but giving formula company vitamins?

On a visit to the Dr. a little while ago, the Dr. mentioned that breastfeeding moms need to supplement their baby with vitamins, especially vitamin D.

I am of the thought that breastmilk contains everything a baby needs. However, I am okay with giving Baby A vitamins to be safe.

Then she wrote me a script for an over the counter vitamin called Poly Vi Sol. Having no clue what it was I googled it.
It's made by Enfamil.

Enfamil Poly-Vi-Sol with Iron Drops
I have chosen to breastfeed our daughter for many reasons. Partly due to food allergies that run in the family, mostly due to health benefits, and lastly because I don't believe in formula. At all (unless the mother is physically unable to breastfeed).

Now, here's the interesting part.
In addition to the vitamins my daughter would receive in a Poly Vi  Sol vitamin, there are a whole host of other ingredients.
Take a look:
(photo from Enfamil's website)

Artificial Caramel Color? Really? Not to mention "slight staining of the teeth" may occur?

Hubby and I decided this was not what we wanted for our daughter & set out to find something we would be comfortable giving our daughter.
Why would we support a formula company when we don't believe in the use of formula (unless you are physically unable to breastfeed)?

Here's what we found:

Animal Parade Baby Plex.

We bought ours at Vitamin Shoppe.

Things I love about Baby Plex:

  • Gluten Free
  • Sugar Free
  • Free of artificial colors, flavors, preservatives.
  • Free of yeast, wheat, soy, and milk!

I am not trying to compare two companies, but what I am trying to do is say, that we owe it to our babies & children to always look for the healthier option.
Our children are growing and developing, why mess that up with artificial ingredients that are unnecessary?

We are very happy with our choice to give our daughter the Baby Plex. It hasn't stained her clothes, and she seems to like the flavor. The only downside, is it DOES smell very vitamin-y. But if that's the only downside, I am definitely glad we made our decision for Baby Plex instead of Enfamil Poly Vi Sol.
