Your Kids Deserve Better Than The Junk You Feed Them!

Baby A has a lot of favorite foods.
Most of which are organic.
Kale. Spinach. Sweet Potatos. Organic Raisins. Carrots. Apples. Eggs. Pomegranate. Coconut Water ( her favorite thing to drink!)
Squash. Bananas. Avocado. Chicken.

When she does ask for cake, cookies, or brownies....they aren't your typical cake, cookies, or brownies. In fact, she wouldn't recognize a "normal" cookie if it was sitting in front of her. Her "ice cream" is bananas, cocoa powder, and stevia.
I don't mind giving her the cake I make because it is made out of black beans and coconut oil with zero refined sugar.

She has never had the flu OR the flu shot. She simply does not get sick, despite being around people who are. She just high fived and chatted with someone at the chiropractor who had a cold & she is perfectly fine. She has played with kids who have the flu, and nope, still not sick.

Baby A wakes up every morning and first asks "Where is my Daddy?" ( Did I mention she talks like a 3 year old?)  To which I reply "At work", next she asks for her vitamins. She knows that she gets her vitamins at dinner time, but is still trying to convince Hubby and I that they are "two a day" not "one a day".

the vitamins she loves soooo much!!
She LIKES her veggies. She LIKES her vitamins. She likes what is good for her.

People are shocked and ask me "How do you get her to eat that way? My kid won't touch [insert healthy food here]". I in turn am shocked at them being surprised that she likes healthy food.....

So I would like to address the "How Question" here.

This post isn't to brag, and isn't to make people who are just starting to be healthy feel bad. This post is there for the parent who knows better, who eats healthy but gets lazy & feeds their children food of a lesser value than themselves. This post is for the parent who doesn't know what healthy is. This is for the everything in moderation parent ( what the heck IS moderation to you?)...
It isn't to down you or make you feel bad, but it is to make a simple point.

CHILDREN ARE PEOPLE TOO.
CHILDREN NEED TO BE HEALTHY TOO.
PUT YOUR CHILDREN FIRST BEFORE YOUR WANTS.

It sounds silly but, people go to fast food places out of laziness.
I am saddened that life has become about convenience for the parent.

We cook every meal here at home, whether I am tired or not it gets done. Hubby jumps in to help and make dinners on the days that I cannot. We take turns. Crockpots & steamers are amazing inventions...so simple to use!! No standing over the stove or taking a ton of effort to make a delicious healthy dinner.
In fact, you set and forget!

Some of the healthiest meals are also the simplest!

what we eat most nights in the ReInvented house.
We eat chicken & broccoli or chicken & asparagus with a small side of quinoa almost nightly and do not get bored. Some nights it's mushrooms, red onions, and cauliflower. Lunches are egg omelettes with spinach or kale....Baby A loves these too!

She asks me every day for "eggies"!
Today she also asked me for a bowl of carrots for lunch, and a banana for breakfast.

It comes down to this.

CHILDREN LIKE WHAT THEY ARE FED.
CHILDREN MIMIC PARENTS HEALTHY OR UNHEALTHY HABITS.
CHILDREN EAT WHAT IS AVAILABLE TO THEM.

If you start your children off healthy from the beginning, then feeding them veggies isn't a chore...they like it!  You don't have to "hide" healthy food in their meals.

Miracle is they are healthier, happier, smarter, and don't even ask for the bad stuff!! Dinner time is not a fight in our household, lunch time isn't either. Snack time is always healthy.

We don't keep junk food in the house, we as a family ALL eat the SAME things. If she doesn't see us eating bad food, she won't want it. Our health is as important as hers & vice versa! There is no reason for parent or children to eat lesser than each other. Why? Because you are equally important as people.

It has become a motto in our society "Everything in moderation".

You and I both know THAT IS A LOAD OF CRAP.

What is moderation to each individual? Why is it ok to eat bad sometimes & then not others?
Wonder why children are confused?
Because we make them that way with the double standards of " you can have candy on halloween but not today" or " it's okay to eat a McDonalds or [insert restaurant here] once a week but not every day". The point is, healthy is a LIFESTYLE, it should be something you desire, not a chore. Yes, it is hard to be healthy these days because so many people are unwell....but things will not change if we don't try. YOU can be the change we need to see in this world. YOU can eat healthy if you put the effort in. YOU can be well.

* Jumping off my soapbox*

I have not always been healthy, nor have I always understood the healthy lifestyle. I changed my life 6 years ago and what an amazing journey it has been!!
I grew up in a house filled with junk food, fast food, diet soda, sugar, and aspartame. Both of my parents were food addicts in one way or another ( wonderful people though, but they didn't know what healthy was).
I had to fight through that as a young adult to come out to the other side of what healthy is. I am so glad that I ventured out on my own to figure it out or I never would have become the healthy person I am today.
Every day I fight through health conditions that are a result of my previous unhealthy lifestyle, but they are getting better....I am getting better.

Anyone can change if they have the desire to. Your kids can embrace new healthy habits too....just rid your cupboard of junk food and tell your kids that the car does not stop at fast food places....there will be an adjustment period, but it's worth it.

Be well.

Eat well.

Treat your children well.

No excuses.

REINVENT YOURSELF.

I hope this gives someone the courage or conscience they need to make the change.

A little tough love from Lolli today.

(TT): Garden Update (video) and more!

I am so thankful for all of the sun we have had. Over 2 straight weeks of sun. I am also thankful for the rain that we got last night, even though it caused a lot of pain and difficulty getting out of bed this morning. The garden needed it.

In my last post I posted a picture of the damage that the roofers had done to our garden. Thankfully, I was able to salvage the garden, and it  wasn't as badly damaged as I had anticipated. Just a little bit of TLC helped get it back and growing again.

Here is a video of our garden so you can see how it is doing. If you like the little 1 minute videos, I can incorporate more of those onto the blog for recipes and such if you like them.
You can see Baby A's side walk drawings on the porch haha.

Thanks for taking the tour of our garden.

I am also very thankful for the ability to stay home with Baby A, it has really helped her development and self confidence. She is very social and makes friends very easily. She will walk up to any kid ( even a 6 year old) and say hi. I think it is great that she is growing so well. Hubby and I are blessed to have such a wonderful kid.

Why Organic is Important..and How to know what really is Organic.

So, there is a lot of talk about eating organic. There are people like me who strongly believe in it, and then there are those who question it.

Why is it important, and how do you know you are truly eating organic?

Hubby and I eat organic, and I am confident that it is better for our health.

You may be asking:

Why eat organic?

Here's why:
  • Organic food has far less pesticides than conventional produce
  • There is evidence that organic produce contains more nutrients than it's non-organic counterparts.
  • It tastes better!  It is not coated in a bunch of chemicals, so you can actually taste the produce!
  • Organic meat is not given hormones, making it safer than those that are injected with hormones.
  • Organic food in not GMO ( genetically modified).
Check out more reasons why here: http://www.organicconsumers.org/organlink.cfm

How do I know Organic really is better for me?

Lucky for us, there are rules in place to make sure that organic truly is organic.

"Before a product can be labeled ‘organic,’ a Government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDAorganic standards.  Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certified, too."

There are different levels of organic.

I always look for certified organic when shopping for organic food. This ensures that my food most certainly is organic.
I don't want to be eating pesticides, chemicals, and GMO's!

I always look for this seal!
This means I can trust that my food really is what it claims to be.

How are the organic products monitored and assessed?

The NOP (National Organic Program) makes sure that the organic animals, produce, and other agriculture are all up to the USDA organic standards.  Organic certification agencies verify and inspect to make sure that the organic farms, ranchers, processors, and distributors meet the USDA organic guidelines.

The USDA also conducts investigations and has enforcement policies in place to make sure that organic products are up to regulation.

If your organic product carries the USDA seal, that you can be certain that your organic product contains 95% or higher organic content.

There are 30,000 on site inspections every year by certifying agents who monitor compliance with USDA organic standards.
There are also audits, residue testing, and other compliance and enforcement activities.

Please view the links and resources below for detailed, valuable information.

After reading all of these links, I feel so much better knowing that the organic produce I am buying really is organic.

Do you buy organic?
Have you had people question or challenge you because you do?

I know that I want to eat pesticide free, GMO free, chemical free food...this means buying certified organic.

I know that no system is 100% perfect all the time, but buying organic is way better for my body than conventional produce.

ASK ME MONDAY! #9

" Why should I buy organic? What is the difference between that and regular veggies? How do I know it's really organic?"

Great question! I had the same question several years ago. I am so happy to be buying 90% of our produce organic. Some things just aren't available organic in the stores near me. I live in a "food desert" so-to-speak. Getting healthy organic food requires trips to 3 grocery stores for us to get our weekly groceries.

However, it is worth it.

What is so great about organic?

  1. No toxic pesticides
  2. Not GMO ( it hasn't been genetically modified in a lab)
  3. No chemicals
These are 3 really important reasons to buy organic. Pesticides, chemicals, and genetically modified food can be dangerous to our health.

Organic food is food the way it was meant to be eaten, pure and clean from the earth.

When looking for organic foods whether it be fruits, veggies, milk, meats, etc. Look for the words "certified organic".

This symbol is important:

It means that the food has been grown under strict standards. You can trust that food with this label is organic.

Don't just take my word for it though.
Do some research of your own.

Oil Cleansing!

You may wonder what "oil cleansing" is.
I did when I first heard the term.
Then after I tried it, I wished I had done it all along.

Oil cleansing is the act of washing your face with oil, instead of soap.
As someone who struggled with horrible acne for years, and tried every anti-acne & oil free wash on the market that I could find...I was surprised when oil cleansing worked for me.

A while ago hubby and I switched to natural soap, however, my face was still dry & oily at the same time. That horrible combination skin that every one dreads having.

I was like "what the heck" I will give it a try. After all, nothing else had worked over the years.

Guess what?

Washing my face with oil....is working!!

My skin is sooooo much better than it was before! It has mostly cleared up and is not combination any more, and it's not oily. It is balanced!

It even removes my stubborn waterproof mascara easily!

How do you do oil cleansing?

Different oils work for different people, the nice thing about oil cleansing is there aren't a ton of hard fast rules.

#1 rule: Do not use canola oil.

Use a natural oil.

Some oils people like to use are:

Grapeseed oil
Jojoba oil
Avocado
Olive Oil
Argan Oil
Coconut Oil
not my photo. image googled from around the web.

I personally wash my face with a 50/50 mix of Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil & Organic Coconut Oil.  I blend the two oils in a jar and keep it by the sink for face washing.

I apply the oil to my face in circular motions like a face wash, then  I take a wash cloth with hot ( not scalding hot, more like really warm!) water &  remove the oil with the washcloth and water.

Afterwards if my skin feels balanced, I do not use moisturizer. If my face feels dry, I apply the tiniest but of the oil mixture as a moisturizer.

The idea behind oil cleansing is LIKE DISSOLVES LIKE.

I just wanted to share, it doesn't mean it will work for every one,  but it works for me!

There is a lot online about oil cleansing, google it and see what you find. Different people like different oil mixtures :)

The Biggest Moneymaker....Cancer.

I honestly cannot add to this.

This article was well written and I found myself immersed in it as I was reading it.

All I can really state is my opinion that I do think that (like stated in the article) "the wolf is guarding the hen house".
We have a voice, we can speak with our dollars.

Buy organic.
Say no to GMO.
Buy used when possible.
Use natural/organic skin care products.
Be a label reader!!
Say no to sugar.
Use natural products to clean & freshen your home.

Be aware of what is going on around you.

Read whatever you can get your hands on to stay informed.

Know what you are putting in, on, and around your body....and do the same for your kids. It is our job to protect our children.

These are my opinions. I hope that you will read this great article!
