MIA but for Good Reason :)

I apologize for being MIA lately. It has been extremely busy around the ReInvented Household. We literally just finished moving into a HOUSE this weekend. So happy to be out of apartments!
It was a long move and with a 2 year old, well, you know that can be both fun and challenging.
On top of that I have been studying for school and getting ready for a big test, so that has been time consuming as well.
I am 15 1/2 weeks pregnant with Baby B now. It is amazing how much more I feel Baby B early on than I felt Baby A! Also my tummy is much smaller than last time! I haven't  even hit maternity clothes yet.
We have a birth center orientation this week. We are very excited! A new one opened up last year, and a friend told me about it, so we are checking it out. A birth center and home birth weren't an option with Baby A, but both are options with Baby B!
So many differences, yet so many similarities.
I ended up with a PUPPP rash at 12 weeks with Baby B, but with Baby A I didn't get it until 34 weeks. I have been using natural remedies and THE RASH IS ALMOST GONE! The itch is very minimal. I am so grateful for essential oils.
We have been shopping for cloth diapers, we recently bough some diapers for  Baby B...some Kawaii's and Diaper Safari's. We love them...

Then in a cloth diaper group on facebook I met a really nice woman who just opened an Etsy shop! She sent me a diaper to review!!
I cannot wait to share my review with you! It is a newborn size diaper, and the quality is incredible. Keep a look out in the next week for a review on Cutie Doodie Diapers!!

Here is her etsy link the in the meantime so you can check her diapers out:

I am very excited to bring this review to you!

Back to unpacking! We are setting up Baby A's room in the new house, and then tackling the rest of the kitchen! The kitchen here is huge, I feel so spoiled!

Spring Issue of Green Child Magazine is Here!

I absolutely love reading Green Child Magazine!
This issue I thought was a particularly good one, it is filled with recipes, an article on breastfeeding, and sustainable diapering options.

Just wanted to share.

I just wanted to share something I enjoy!
Happy Tuesday!

Whipped Shea Baby Butt Butter Recipe!

A lot of people have been asking me for my diaper rash cream recipe. This recipe came about because Baby A was getting some bad rashes at one point. We had tried other CD safe diaper creams, and while they helped, they didn't get rid of the rash.
I found that when I used my shea body butter on Baby A, her rash got a little better, but it needed a boost...and this is how the "Whipped Shea Baby Butt Butter" was born.

This has worked miracles on Baby A's bum, and she rarely ever gets rashes now, not even the little rashes!

I have never had problems with this building up in my cloth diapers either. I use various different kinds of cloth diapers from hemp, bamboo, to microfiber inserts, and even the few pocket diapers I have, haven't had any issues. It may or may not build up on yours, use your own judgement.

I  hope that this will help your baby as much as it has mine!!

Recipe

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Raw Shea Butter
1/2 cup Coconut Oil
1/2 cup olive oil or jojoba oil
1-2 tsp. zinc oxide powder
Optional: Essential oils like lavender or tea tree oil. Note that some babies cannot use essential oils so use with caution, ask your Dr before using essential oils on your baby.

Directions:
  • I use a pot and a mason jar instead of a double boiler, either works. Place a small amount of water in the bottom of the pot with the mason jar in the center. I use approx. 2-3 inches of water.
  • Bring the stove burner up to medium heat ( I set my burner at a 5-6)
  • Place all the ingredients in the mason jar.
  • Make sure to stir occasionally until all the ingredients are melted into liquid.
  • Remove the jar from the heat, and pour melted ingredients into a glass mixing bowl.
  • Cover the mixing bowl and place in fridge for 1+ hours or freeze for approx. 40 minutes.
  • You will want the mixture to harden but still be somewhat soft.
  • Use a hand mixer and whip until fluffy.
  • Now, you will be adding in your zinc oxide powder ( do not inhale, I wear a mask)
  • Mix with the mixer again until all the powder is incorporated.
  • Transfer into shallow mason jar and place lid on ( should make 2 of size in picture above)
  • Place in fridge for approx. 10 minutes.
  • Remove from fridge and store in the nursery for use on baby's bum.
Helpful notes:
  • You can add 2-4 drops of essential oil while whipping the butter.
  • I use 1 tsp of zinc oxide, but more can be used if baby has a bad rash. I would increase 1/4 tsp at a time until  you find the right balance for your baby. I don't recommend more than 2 tsp. for this recipe.
  • Make sure to wash hands and all utensils used to make this thoroughly.
  • Keep zinc oxide powder out of reach of children and do not breathe in the particles.
  • Keep body butter in a room below 72 degrees fahrenheit. Hot rooms may cause this to liquefy slightly. If this occurs place back in fridge for 10 minutes.
  • Where I get my Shea and Zinc: https://www.essentialdepot.com/

I hope that you have found this helpful!

Let me know how it works for you!

Weekly Recap!: Cloth diapers, Fun in the Sun, Donut Hole Recipe and Amber.

I hope that you all had a fantastic weekend! We sure did!

We had a great time at the beach on Saturday. It was nice to relax and "get away from it all". Armed with cloth diapers, spring water, and plenty of home made snacks, we had no worries. The water was beautiful, the people were friendly, the sun wasn't too bright....
While we were there Baby A met a friend the same age as her, she hit it off with her right away. They played and made sand castles. Even better, I found out that she was cloth diapered! Her mom was super friendly, we even talked tie dye.
It looks like I will be doing tie dye in the very near future! So exciting!

Also this weekend, we ordered some supplies to make our own sunscreen for our next trip to the beach this coming weekend. We ordered the shea butter, bee's wax, and zinc oxide last night...and it already shipped today! Talk about awesome! In addition we got the 5 lbs. of shea butter at an insanely low price!

Here are the products we are getting in the mail:

1 lb. zinc oxide from Essential Depot
(these are not my photos, images from essentialdepot.com)

5 lbs. Shea Butter from Essential Depot

1 lb. Beeswax Pastilles from Essential Depot

In addition, I have been researching a ton on the healing powers of natural hematite and amber.
I decided that amber best suited our needs at this time, but will be looking into the hematite (and possibly hazelwood) in the near future. I hope to share what I have read with you all soon!

We also decided to buy our amber necklaces last night.

Here's what we got:

Hubby's Super Butter Necklace from hazelaid.com
(these are not my photos, images from hazelaid.com)
My Nutmeg Necklace from hazelaid.com

Baby A's Super Butter Necklace from hazelaid.com
I am super excited to get these in the mail!

Even more ground breaking news for my amazing readers:

I got 8 out of the 15 likes on facebook for my donut holes...so since I like you guys so much, I will share my guilt free Cinnamon Roll Donut Hole recipe with you TOMORROW. The chocolate recipe will wait for more likes!

Yummy preview ;)

Are you on facebook? Like my page ( link in right side bar).

As I have stated recently, I also have a Naturally Fresh Deodorant Review which is almost complete and ready for the blog soon, as well as The Better Chip Review!

My Cloth Diaper Wash Routine (How-To)

When first starting out with cloth diapers, it can be confusing.

The biggest question I had was :
"How the heck do I wash these things?"

There are many different ways to wash cloth diapers. Different manufacturers have different requirements.

For example, my diaper covers cannot be washed on hot.... and the instructions say no bleach ( I wouldn't use bleach anyway, it's very toxic).

Other reasons for different types of washing routines is the water. Some people have well water, others city water, hard water, soft water, etc.

Laundry soap is also another factor.

My goal in writing this is to show you how I wash my cloth diapers, and hopefully help you in the process of figuring out your wash routine.

I live in an apartment and have a mini washer of my own. It works just as great ( if not better) than some regular size washers! I can wash a full load of diapers every other day in it with no problem .

My wash routine took 2 months to establish. I went through trial and error to establish it. Through that trial and error, I only had  to strip my diapers twice. Partly because Baby A also had a diaper rash and the cream wanted to build up ( had zinc oxide in it).

However, since that time I have not had to strip my diapers at all. Once my wash routine was established, I have had no issues with the diapers absorbancy!

The key to washing cloth diapers is "Rinse Rinse Rinse" in other words... LOTS of water.

Here is my cloth diaper wash routine:

1. I wash my cloth diaper covers first. They are separate as they cannot be washed on HOT.
2. I separate out my covers and put them in the machine on COLD. They go on HEAVY wash & HIGH water which is the heaviest setting on my machine. I add in 2-3 drops of tea tree and/or lavender oil. I also add in 3/4 manufacturer's recommended amount of laundry soap.
3. Once the 1st wash is done, I add a rinse cycle. The covers are done.

*Before washing covers I use a diaper sprayer to spray out the poopy ones.

Now that the covers are clean, I go to the diaper pail and pull out the inserts & prefolds.
I have hemp. microfiber, and bamboo. I wash them all together the same with no issues.
These can go on hot :)
*provided it follows manufacturer directions, otherwise don't use hot water.

1. I spray out any diapers that  have poop ( Baby A poops 4 times a day, and always poops right before diaper laundry....always)

2. I put the washer on WARM/COLD, HEAVY, HIGH water setting. I add in 2-3 drops of tea tree oil.
This is considered my pre-rinse cycle. A rinse was not enough for Baby A as she is a heavy wetter. She pees A LOT, so this is better than standing there and spraying pee out of each and every diaper ( who has time for that?!) I add in diapers.

3. When the 1st cycle is done, I come back and move the water temperature to HOT (allowed by my diaper manufacturer), HEAVY wash cycle, HIGH water setting. I add in 1 scoop of Borax ( I use an old protein scoop that is 21 g...just short of 1 ounce), I have found this amount is perfect for Baby A's diapers.

I add in Sun Free & Clear detergent. I have used this with no problems at all!

4. Once this wash is done. I do another cycle COLD, HEAVY wash cycle, HIGH water setting. This is my final rinse setting. Instead of running a bunch of rinses, I find this most effective. I don't add anything to this cycle. Just water ;)

 5. I hang my covers and inserts to dry on a drying rack. I don't ever put them through the dryer. I sun them through our sliding glass door which helps to sanitize and get out stains.

Every once in a while for extra cleaning power I change up the insert routine.

1.      I put the Borax in the first cycle with the tea tree oil/lavender oil.
2.      2nd cycle I add in soap &  ½ cup hydrogen peroxide.
3.      3rd cycle stays the same.

I like to use this second routine on days where it is not sunny and the diapers could use the disinfecting power of the peroxide.

I haven’t had to strip my diapers with my wash routine. The diapers come out clean every time. I have softer city water. I think if I had hard water I would only have to change up the soap I use as some people have mentioned to me that powder is better than liquid when you don’t have good “diaper water”.

My routine can take up to 3 hours. I don’t mind because I don’t have to strip my diapers like some people I know have to do.

One key when washing cloth diapers :
Make sure they smell like nothing when you hang them up to dry. If they smell like soap or anything....rinse some more. If they still smell like pee or poo, then you need to use more soap.

Another Note:
I wash my cloth wipes right in with my prefolds and inserts! I simply use baby wash cloths as cloth wipes.

Check out my cloth wipes recipe here.

What is your cloth diaper routine? What soap do you use? Do you sun your diapers?

I would love to hear your routine!

As always, be sure to follow manufacturer washing instructions, do not void the warranty on your diapers. These are only things that have worked for me, you have to find what works for you.

Easy Cloth Wipes Solution {Recipe}

I was all in on cloth diapers  from day one! We cloth diapered Baby A in the hospital and she hasn't worn a single disposable diaper. ( exception: the nurses brought her back to me in a disposable and as soon as they handed her to me, I ripped it off and put on some fluff).
However, that whole time I was using disposable wipes. For whatever reason, I didn't even think I could do cloth wipes too. I knew other moms did, but I guess it was too big of a leap for me in the beginning.
Just recently, about a month ago, Hubby and I switched to cloth wipes for Baby A. I am so glad we did! It is soooo much better!

I bought about 60 baby washcloths like these (link).

I saved an old Pamper's wipes container and washed it out.
Then I came up with the solution that works best for my baby girl's bum.

Many of the ingredients are optional. I recommend the soap and a moisturizing agent. I like the tea tree because it helps to prevent mold and promotes healing.

Recipe:

1 squirt ( 3/4 tsp approx) Dr Bronner's Castile Soap ( I like the tea tree scent)
1 tsp olive oil
1 tsp aloe juice or gel
3-5 drops tea tree essential oil
3-5 drops lavender essential oil
2 cups water

Mix all ingredients together.
Place wipes in container.
Pour solution over wipes.
Close wipes container tight, and shake to disperse solution.

Done.

I hope that this works for your baby too!

Do you use cloth wipes?
Do you have a favorite wipes solution recipe?

Some babies have sensitive skin, use essential oils with caution and care. Don't ever apply essential oils directly to your babies skin ( or your own) without knowing the proper dilutions. Omit essential oils if you/ your baby is sensitive.

Wanna Know More About Cloth Diapers?

Over the next several weeks/months....I will be posting more about cloth diapers than I have previously! We have full time cloth diapered Baby A since she was born. Her first diaper was a cloth diaper...in the hospital!

Anyway, we live in an apartment and I have been getting a ton of questions on how to care for cloth diapers. We have used many different kinds, so I will be posting more about the diapers we have used, washing routines, and more.

Please leave any cloth diaper related questions in the comments!

Your questions will help me decide what to post about first and how many more posts I do on cloth diapers. I want to post about what you all are interested in!

My Nighttime Cloth Diapering Solution!

When we first brought Baby A home, we were using covers and inserts at night time. She didn't need anything more. As she grew though, we discovered she is a SUPER soaker!
During the day she needed 2 inserts in her covers, and at night time, that was not enough! We used hemp inserts !

So many other cloth diapering moms I have noticed, are running into the same problem of "double stuffing" their babies diapers and still getting leaks. This can be frustrating and time consuming.

But there is a better way... at least for us there was!

We decided to start using Bottombumpers OS AIO diapers at night time....and I am so glad we did. These are THE most absorbant diaper I have run across yet.

When she was first born the Bottombumpers were too bulky for her as she was so little, they didn't fit under her daytime clothes, however now that she is bigger they could honestly be used for daytime or nighttime and are not bulky on her at all. She is 20 lbs. now to give you an idea of her size.

These are 2 out of our 3 Bottombumpers, the other one we own is red. It is in the pail at the moment.

I love the internal snap sizing system. It is super simple to do and works great. You attach the green snap to which ever color is the right size for your baby.

Baby A is still on the smallest size setting right now, she was a chubby baby, but then her legs leaned out when she started walking. So this is what her diaper looks like sized. The white snaps are for the soaker to attach.

This is what the soaker and inside of the diaper look like.
The soaker is made out of bamboo and is super absorbant. The inside of the diaper is lined with a cotton fabric.

The diaper is ready to go once you snap in the soaker and fold under the extra length. I love the long length because folding it over gives even more absorbancy right where Baby A needs it!
The soaker is super soft too. We air dry our diapers so they get a tad stiff, but these are less stiff than our hemp inserts are after airdrying. If you tumble dry low they would be super soft!

This is the diaper with the insert in and folded up.

Like I said earlier, on a tiny baby they could be bulky for daytime, but are perfect for night time. I thought that they would be fine for day use though when Baby A was about 6 months old. She is tiny for her age though so it may be less bulky on your baby!
The bulkiness definitely isn't a bother!!

She doesn't pee out in these. She peed out 2 times in the entire 14 1/2 months she's been wearing these. Once was when I left it on for a long time ( 10 hour night ) on the weekend, just to see if it would hold up to her pee. It lasts 8 hours at night no problem for her!

They are super easy to wash and I love that I can wash them on hot to get them super clean too. Be sure to check out their washing instructions before washing as you would with any cloth diaper.

Please check out their website. These are quality diapers, and we love them in our house!!

These opinions are all true and my own. I did not receive any compensation for this post. This post is of a product I currently own and love!!

Ask Lolli Monday! : Getting Started with Cloth Diapers

Is it too late to start cloth diapering? My son is 1 year old. If not, then what cloth diapers do I choose? Are they expensive? How do I clean them? How many should I buy to get started? What do you use?

These are great questions! Most of them are questions that I too had when I wanted to start cloth diapering.

It isn't too late to cloth diaper. You can still reap health benefits and savings, as well as help the planet by reducing the amount of diapers in the landfill.
Cloth diapering can seem like a huge undertaking, especially if you are like me and research like crazy. However, it isn't bad at all. In fact, I really really like it!
If I could go back, I would have to say that less is more when it comes to cloth diapering accessories.

So here are some basics to get you started:

  1. How many do I need? When we started cloth diapering Baby A as a newborn we had 8 covers and 16 inserts. This was for full time cloth diapering. We added a couple of AIO/AI2 style diapers at night time when we discovered that she is a super soaker!
  2. Are they expensive? Cloth diapering doesn't have to be expensive. There are some inexpensive diapers that work great, and come in nice colors too!
  3. What cloth diapers to choose ?/ What do you use? I have to say that it is always best to try different kinds of diapers. When we first brought Baby A home, we were exclusively using Sprout Change. While these were great for the short term, the covers ended up being low quality in comparison to our other diapers...after 5 months the all started leaking out of the seams. However, the inserts are super absorbant and great quality.  I also strongly disliked gDiapers, the covers were low quality and did not contain newborn poop. During this time we had bought some other diapers that are still going strong. This is a point to say that not all cloth diapers are created equal. Right now, we use Bottombumpers AIO/OS. These are HANDS DOWN the most absorbant diapers I have ever put on Baby A. She never leaks out of them, ever. They are a tad bit bulky so I use them for nighttime only. These run approx. $22-23 which can be a little pricey on a budget if you are buying a lot of them. But I will say they are worth every penny. We also have some GroVia's that we love and a Softbums, these make nice bedtime diapers for her as well, however, they can get pricey as well. My favorite cloth diapering combination for Baby A during the daytime is a Thirsties cover with a Sprout Change hemp insert ( & doubler insert of pretty much any brand I have) or  a Kawaii OS diaper cover with a Sprout Change hemp insert & a doubler. Another winning combination is a Kawartha pocket diaper ( used as a cover) with a Kawartha insert. These inserts are super absorbant.  If  I were to recommend any for price & quality. I would say Kawaii and Kawartha, these are my favorites in our stash. In fact I just bought 4 more Kawaii covers & 4 inserts for  $32.20 ( on sale ) ! That's a really great deal!
  4. How do I clean them?  Over time you will come up with the perfect routine that works for you. It will take some trial and error. This is because everyone's diapers, water, washing machine, and detergent vary! The key is patience and don't be afraid to try something new. Also be sure to follow manufacturer's instructions for washing diapers, covers, and inserts. Now, if you have a newborn or a child who tends to have messy poop, a diaper sprayer might be in order. These can be pricey sometimes, but aren't completely necessary. Some moms I know use a strong ( garden style) spray bottle of water instead, other moms use the "dunk and swish" method, while others use a diaper butler. It all depends what works for you. If it is pee, it just goes in the pail for wash day.
There is so much more to cloth diapering. This is just the very basic of basics. I will be writing more on cloth diapers, sharing my wash routine, and what has worked for me over the past 14 months. Please keep reading my blog for more info!

Also, if you are a cloth diapering mom please share your experiences in the comments below!
Please help our friend out!

Ask Me Monday : Natural Parenting!

It's Monday again! Time for an Ask Me Monday question. The first question of 2013!

" Do you find people accepting of your natural parenting style? Do you have any advice for a mom to be?..."

Our natural parenting style tends to be more accepted and supported by those our own age, and those my grandmother's age. People my parent's age (45-55) are the ones who have given me the most trouble about our parenting style. Although I am sure each person's situation is different.

I have had some people try to convince me to feed my daughter formula or french toast, others wanted me to feed her Gerber baby food. Of course, I believe in breastfeeding, avoid sugar, and make our baby food at home.

The most issues people tend to have is with the attachment parenting side of things. Our daughter still doesn't sleep in her own bed. People have told us to let her cry it out (we refuse, that is nonsense in our house), & are worried she will never sleep in her bed. My thoughts of this? I am sure that by the time she is school age she will want to be in her own bed. I am not worried if she sleeps in her co-sleeper beside our bed, its not hurting anyone's sleep.

My advice?
  • Go with your instinct. Do what works for you.
  • We chose breastfeeding, cloth diapers, safe co-sleeping, home made organic baby food, delayed vaccines, and baby wearing. This is what works for us.
  • If receiving unwanted advice, graciously say thank you and move on. You don't have to take the advice. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for what is right for your child.
  • Parent with love. Follow your parenting instincts, and let every decision be made with love.
  • Talk to other natural parents and share your parenting experiences with each other. A lot can be learned this way!
  • Pick up books and magazines from your local library on natural parenting/attachment parenting.
  • Don't stress, your baby will tell you what they need as they grow. They may not be able to talk, but they communicate their needs.

I hope this helps!

I am so happy we chose natural parenting. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Lolli

Do you cloth diaper?

How many people do you know who use cloth diapers?

I was shocked when we took Baby A to the Dr.'s and a woman who worked there said she had only seen 2 people who did cloth diapers.....EVER! Us and one other family. I was shocked. You would think that when working with babies all day that she would have seen more than 2 people in her entire career who did cloth!

Then I got to thinking....I didn't know a single person at all who did cloth before I cloth diapered Baby A! I relied on blogs and websites for my cloth diaper information.

I understand that people seem to like disposables for their ease of use and for the length of time the child can wear the diaper. However, how many diapers do we really need to add to the landfill that won't biodegrade? And does your child really need to wear their diaper that long...I mean, why leave them sit in their mess....and do they realize that the "dryness" their child feels is the result of chemicals and gel?

I love cloth diapers! In Baby A's first 2 months of life, they have already contained numerous blow outs and she has a rash free bottom! The small diaper rash she did get earlier on, was from antibiotics I was on and it cleared right up!

My questions for you all today:

Why do you think people got away from cloth diapers?
If you don't do cloth diapers, then why not?
Do you know other people personally who do cloth diapers?

Cloth Diapers We Use : Sprout Change

I had never seen a modern cloth diaper until I won a Sprout Change diaper on a website.

I never in my life had thought I would use cloth diapers on my baby. I didn't know anyone who used cloth diapers, and the idea of poop grossed me out.

Then I got pregnant.

While in my first trimester I ran across several mom blogs. There were a lot of posts on cloth diapers! I became curious, and started reading more.
Anyone who knows me, knows that I research EVERY major decision I make in my life.

I set out on a quest to learn all I could about cloth diapers.
I read about so many brands my head was spinning. There weren't very many cloth diapers that seemed to suit me AND my hubby.

Then I read about Sprout Change.

I was sold on cloth diapers.

Baby Makin(g) Machine's blog is what really sold me on Sprout Change though!

I love that cloth diapering is both great for the environment & my baby girl's bottom!

Even better, it's not hard on the wallet either!

We bought 8 shells and 24 Super Saver Organic Inserts. We have used these diapers since Day 1 with Baby A! All the nurses in the hospital thought she was super cute in cloth. I am so happy we bought these!

What I love about Sprout Change:

* Snap Closure
* Internal Sizing
* Not overly bulky
*Reversible Cover
*Front or Side Snap options
* Fits from 5 to 40 lbs!

Sprout Change has contained even the messiest of newborn poop explosions!
Baby A is also a heavy wetter, and these diapers contain all her messy pees too!

We have only had a couple times where she peed out in the beginning. This was because I hard time figuring out which button to size to. She has chunky ( adorably so!) thighs that were between a 4 and 5 measurement, so I had made it too loose. But when I got the size right she was dry.
We also have to double stuff her at night because she is an EXTREMELY heavy wetter.

I think Sprout Change is perfect for us!

I recommend it to all my friends who are interested in trying cloth!

Adventures in Newborn Cloth Diapering

Cloth diapering has been a wonderful adventure for us so far. I have made a few mistakes, but learned from them and moved on.
Our daughter has only been in 1 "sposie" diaper (the diaper they put on her at the hospital). Her first diaper change at the hospital Hubby and I changed her into her cloth diapers. While we were in the hospital dealing with meconium we used biodegradable inserts in our cloth covers.
Once we got home we switched all the way over to our cloth inserts & haven't looked back.
A few things that were challenges for me was figuring out the sizing ( we use One Size covers that size through the elastic) I kept wanting to make the legs too loose to avoid marks...which led to a night time leak. Then we found out our daughter is a HEAVY wetter. So I started "double stuffing" her diaper at night time...problem solved!
She is dry day & night now.
The other issue I've had with cloth diapering is the diaper sprayer. The newborn poop kind of goes everywhere....and so does the diaper sprayer. I am starting to get a handle on the sprayer & how to use it so I don't drench the bathroom....
Any tips on sprayer technique though, please send them my way!

Cloth Diaper Questions~!

I am very excited to cloth diaper Baby A when she arrives. In order to succeed, I want to make sure I start off on the right foot. So...I asked around and one kind blogger helped me out!

Check out her blog post with the answer to my question & her wash routine!

Now, my cloth diapers are all prepped and I am awaiting Baby A's arrival.

Cloth Diaper Prep!

Thanks to all the advice on how to prep diapers, and my hubby lugging laundry down to the dryer for me ( thank you hubby! my 9 month waddle wouldn't get me there very well!)....our cloth diapers are prepped & ready for Baby A's arrival!

Here's our newly prepped stash:

Our Bottombumpers OS stash!
 3 diapers, 3 inserts.
These are some of the softest inserts!
And I love that the size is a snap down on the inside of the diaper. I like hidden sizing.

gDiapers stash.
2  small diaper covers, 4 liners, 2 pail liners, 12 small microfleece/hemp inserts.
These inserts too are very soft. The pail liners will be nice in our Diaper Dekor pail.

Our Sprout Change stash!
These are the diapers I am most excited about, which is why there are so many in our stash. 9 diaper covers (reversible), 25 hemp inserts.
These will be the ones she can wear from birth as they go as small as 5 lbs!
I love the internal elastic sizing for both the waist and the legs!

I cannot wait for Baby A to try all her cute little diapers out.

One surprise we had when prepping the hemp inserts was the amount of "fuzz" in the washer!  The hemp inserts shed like crazy the first wash or so, but then are great! At first I was a little freaked that maybe something was wrong, but it was all a part of the prep process.
Did you have any surprises or worries when prepping your cloth?

I will be sure to share my opinions on the diapers I have as Baby A tries them out when she is born next month.

There are a few other diaper brands that I would love to try out! I think the Softbums Omni system looks great with the slide 2 size system, and the Envibum diapers are adorable and unique with the waffle style inside and unique sizing!

Can you tell I am a sucker for OS diapers?

We also have 2 Fuzzibunz small wet bags on their way in the mail...for when we are out and about.

Has anyone used these (or any of the diapers mentioned in this post)? Opinions?

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Why We Chose Cloth Diapers!

"You're gonna use what?! "
That's the response I most anticipated when telling people that we will be using cloth diapers for Baby A.

Thankfully though, the response was more positive than expected. My mother and mother in law are both very supportive which is nice. My hubby is completely on board.

Other people, they are skeptical...but that's okay, its not their choice.

We will be exclusively using cloth.
Using biodegradeable inserts in our cloth covers only for the first couple of days while we are dealing with meconium.

The brand of cloth diapers we chose to go with is Sprout Change. We will be using the Organic supersaver inserts in the covers. These diapers are One Size (adjustable) ranging from 5 to 40 lbs.!

Other brands that look great, and I would love to try out sometime are Bottombumpers & Softbums!

So why did we choose cloth?

So many reasons.....

  1. It's better for the environment. Why would I want to contribute to the billions of disposable diapers going into the landfill already?
  2. My child's health! There are chemicals like Dioxin, in many brands of disposable diapers. Not to mention, babies in disposables are more prone to yeast infections and diaper rash.
  3. It costs less! From birth to potty training, I can anticipate saving close to @ $1500-$2000!  Not a bad deal.
  4. They are super cute! Have you seen a baby in a cloth diaper?! They are adorable!
  5. They tend to result in less "blow outs" according to several cloth diapering moms. Enough said.
  6. The new cloth diapers are NOTHING like the old ones! Easy to use, and they don't require pins! Many use snaps or velcro!
  7. I have heard that babies who are cloth diapered tend to be potty trained sooner! Bonus!
I hope this list was enough to help you to at least consider cloth diapers as an option!
Don't like poo? Get a diaper sprayer. It's that simple. No more toilet swishing like the "old days".

But don't take my word for it, check out these links for more reasons why cloth diapers are a good choice!

For us...cloth diapers just make sense.
